Galveston Eats: Island Olives

The Galveston Eats project documents the disappearing food cultures of the Galveston Bay area in cooperation with The Gulf Coast Food Project (University of Houston) and Foodways Texas (UT Austin). The short film, “Island Olives” recounts the history of the many olive trees planted on Galveston Island by Italian immigrants in the late 19th and early 20th centuries through interviews with their descendants. Olive curing tips, secret olive salad recipes and muffaletta sandwich lore are featured.
